Tim Atkin confers excellent scores to the wines of Viña Morandé

Under the current circumstances, Tim Atkin, the well-known British critic and Master of Wine, was unable to travel to Chile to prepare his long-awaited Special Report on Chilean wines. Instead of touring the wine regions, visiting wineries, and interviewing different winemakers (as usual), for his 2021 report Atkin tasted the wines online. We share here with great pride, the excellent scores granted to Viña Morandé by one of the most respected voices in the international wine scene.

As the wine offer becomes wider and more attractive, consumers might find it hard to choose a particular bottle either by origin, style, quality, or price. The huge diversity has led many to search for advice in the opinions of those who are currently considered great connoisseurs and communicators regarding the subject of wines. And although their scores don’t represent absolute values (let’s not forget that there is no accounting for taste), their criteria can be seen as an important source of information. Their judgments, issued from their particular tastes and knowledge, are certainly an important guide to approach new and unknown wines.

One of these voices, acknowledged and respected worldwide when it comes to evaluating wines, is that of Tim Atkin, the renowned British Master of Wine. His long-standing relation with Chile includes some 15 visits to the country and five detailed reports on our wines, all eagerly awaited each year by the wine industry. His latest, that of 2021, which will be published after Easter, was carried out online for the first time. This doesn’t undermine its importance, since Atkin is a real expert regarding the characteristics of our geography and how it expresses itself in a great diversity of wines.

We invite you to review the most outstanding scores granted by Atkin to our wines:

House of Morandé 2018, our emblematic Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo and our highest quality wine, endorsed by a long history, was acknowledged with 94 points (over 100).

For its part, our Carignan VIGNON 2018, which is made with grapes from old vines planted in the Maule Valley, obtained 93 points.

92 points were granted to four wines that belong to the Adventure range: Bestiario 2019 (a white wine vinified as a red with grapes from the Maule Valley); Aterciopelado 2020 (a blend of País and Malbec from the Maule Valley); Creole 2020 (a blend of Cinsault and País from Maule), and Despechado 2020 (Pinot Noir from the Casablanca Valley).

Two other members of the Adventures range, El Padre 2019, made with Cabernet Franc grapes, and Malmau 2019, Malbec from old vines from the Maule Valley, were awarded 91 points. And our Estate Reserve Gewürztraminer 2020 also stood out with 91 points.

Still two more wines from the Adventures range were granted 90 points: Gran Petit 2019, a blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot from Alto Cachapoal, and Mediterráneo 2018, a blend of red and white Mediterranean varieties. Our Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, from the Maipo Valley, was also acknowledged with 90 points.

Last, but not least, we are proud to communicate that our outstanding Edición Limitada Golden Harvest 2013, obtained excellent 96 points, one of the highest scores for a Chilean wine of this type.
