MAULE VALLEY: NATURAL DIVERSITY AND TERROIR EXPRESSION

The Maule Valley is much more than Chile’s largest winegrowing region—it is the origin of a living story that is constantly being renewed. Located in the heart of the country, this valley has witnessed the evolution of Chilean viticulture from its earliest steps in the 16th century to its current renaissance on the international stage.

With over 50,000 hectares of vineyards, Maule is defined by its incredible geographic and climatic diversity. The region spans from broad, sun-drenched valleys to coastal hills and a vast central corridor, offering a wide range of conditions for grape cultivation. This heterogeneity makes it a true natural laboratory for varietal expression, with 74% of plantings dedicated to red varieties and 26% to whites.

Maule’s climate is typically Mediterranean, with dry, warm summers and cold, rainy winters. But what truly sets it apart is the influence of cold winds that descend from the Andes Mountains. This airflow creates a marked thermal amplitude between day and night, allowing for slow and balanced fruit ripening—key to the development of intense aromas and a naturally refreshing acidity.

Adding to this is the soil: predominantly granitic in origin, formed through the slow decomposition of rocks over millions of years. In the dry-farming areas of the interior and coast, where many vines survive without irrigation, these soils provide ideal conditions for traditional and heritage varieties such as País, Carignan, Cinsault, Semillón, and Muscat.

These grape varieties, some introduced by Spanish colonizers in the 16th century, have found a lasting home in Maule. After centuries of adaptation and cultivation, they have become a true part of Chile’s winemaking heritage. Today, this legacy is being revived and revalued by producers who are rediscovering their worth and proudly sharing them with the world.

The Maule Valley is undoubtedly the cradle of the “new, old Chile”: a place where wine history lives in every corner, yet pulses with modernity, freshness, and a unique identity that only this terroir can offer.
