17 Jun Black Series: Elegant, Complex Wines That Break Boundaries
The portfolio of Viña Morandé’s most innovative line, Black Series, consists of three exceptional wines: a Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir, and a Syrah. With Black Series, the winery has transcended the boundaries of winemaking, creating unique wines with great personality and distinctive character.
Curiosity and an exploratory spirit have always been the essence of Viña Morandé. This distinctive approach, initiated by Pablo Morandé, has permeated the entire winery team, establishing a legacy of innovation and discovery. From its beginnings, Viña Morandé has been a pioneer in exploring new origins, as evidenced by its early foray into the Casablanca Valley, a region now internationally recognized for producing high-quality wines.
With the same exploratory spirit, Viña Morandé reached one of the southernmost areas of Chile: Araucanía, specifically Traiguén in the Malleco Valley. This territory, located between the Andes Mountains and the Nahuelbuta Range, presents extreme climatic conditions with volcanic soils and a cold, rainy climate. However, these characteristics proved ideal for producing high-end wines such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Thus, Black Series was born, a line conceived to create wines of singular elegance and complexity in one of the country’s most challenging terroirs. The first examples were a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, which, in contrast to other regions like Limarí or Aconcagua, known for their marked minerality and sharp acidity, are wines with great tension and austere fruitiness, as well as notable complexity, balance, and finesse.
Black Series Chardonnay stands out for its tense and fresh acidity, with a vertical structure in the mouth. This fine and complex Chardonnay presents a long persistence that highlights the austere character of its fruit and a delicate minerality. Its notes of citrus fruits and green apples are complemented by hints of dried fruits like hazelnuts and roasted chestnuts, offering a rich and sophisticated sensory experience.
On the other hand, Black Series Pinot Noir is an excellent representative of Malleco. This wine develops a fine-grained tannic structure, with discreet yet profound fruit intensity. It is a fresh and juicy wine, with a delicate and firm structure that suggests a great capacity for evolution over time. Its notes of red fruits and almost sanguine mineral character are complemented by floral notes reminiscent of violets, creating a palette of flavors and aromas of great elegance.
The third member, Black Series Syrah, comes from the Limarí Valley, an extreme, peculiar, and striking valley in the north of our country. Here the winery was drawn to the unique climate and soil characteristics of a Syrah vineyard planted in calcareous soils, which shows great character. A zone with its coastal Mediterranean climate and fresh breezes produces elegant and very fresh wines.
Black Series Syrah is characterized by its great varietal purity and complex nose of black cherry, fresh blackberry, and well-integrated wood notes. On the palate, it has a firm texture, is intense, with great fruit balance and elegance.
The Black Series wines surprise with extraordinary quality and unique potential found only in the terroirs of Malleco and Limarí. These wines reflect the winery’s philosophy: a constant pursuit of excellence and originality in every bottle, and an unwavering commitment to innovation and exploration in the art of viticulture.
