Casatinta: A New Chapter for the Casablanca Valley

For many years, the Casablanca Valley has been known for the excellence of its white wines — a vocation discovered by our founder, Pablo Morandé.

That reputation is well deserved: the soils, the coastal influence, and the cool climate provide ideal conditions for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay to express their full potential.

But at Viña Morandé, we’ve always been driven by innovation. More than a decade ago, we set out on a journey that, to some, might have seemed bold: to show that Casablanca can also be home to truly great red wines.

That’s how Casatinta was born — not as a contradiction to the region’s legacy, but as a step forward, an expansion of its identity.

Our work began with a simple question: which red varieties could express the elegance and freshness that Casablanca offers, without losing structure and depth?

After many harvests of observation, micro-vinifications, and patience, we arrived at the blend we’re proud to share today: 72% Malbec, 24% Syrah, and 4% Cabernet Franc, all grown in our Belén vineyard.

This site, located on a northwest-facing slope over red granite soils, proved ideal for our vision. The perfect sun exposure, combined with the cool coastal breeze, allows the grapes to ripen fully while maintaining natural balance.

Each variety brings something unique to the final wine. Malbec contributes floral elegance and bright red fruit, while syrah adds dark fruit and a subtle olive note so typical of Casablanca. Cabernet franc brings structure and spice, completing the blend with depth and complexity.

The result is a wine that brings us deep satisfaction — a refined red, expressing the freshness of its origin and a complexity that unfolds naturally in the glass.

And it’s especially rewarding to see this vision recognized by respected voices in international wine criticism. Since its inaugural vintage in 2020, Casatinta has earned impressive scores — 94 points from Alistair Cooper MW, and 94 from Descorchados, where it was named Vino Revelación of 2024.

The 2021 vintage raised the bar even further, earning 96 points from James Suckling, 95 from Descorchados, and 93 from both Vinous Media and La CAV.

Alejandro Iglesias, writing for Decanter, described Casatinta as “(…) a cutting-edge wine, with tension and lightness” — precisely the attributes we’ve pursued from the beginning.

To us at Viña Morandé, Casatinta is much more than a new label. It’s the realization of an idea we’ve nurtured for years. It proves that Casablanca — with all its white-wine history — also has something powerful to say in the world of high-end reds.

And we’re just getting started.
