VIGNO: Rescuing and Honoring Maule’s Carignan

Since 2009, Viña Morandé has been a member and founding partner of the group of winemakers and Carignan producers. This association, called “Vigno” with a G for Carignan, aims to rescue the valuable wine heritage represented by this variety, which has been naturally cultivated for decades in the dry-farmed area of the Maule region. It is dedicated to caring for and preserving the grape variety, as well as ensuring its continuity through specific standards.

These include purchasing grapes at fair prices, the possibility of carrying the Denomination of Origin (D.O.) and the word VIGNO on labels of wines made with at least 85% Carignan and aged for a minimum of 24 months, whether in a bottle or another container. Additionally, the grapes must come from vineyards over 30 years old, planted in dry-farmed conditions in the Maule Valley.

Following these principles, at Viña Morandé we created Vigno, a blend of Carignan and Syrah from old, head-trained vines in the coastal drylands, with the aim of rescuing and honoring this emblematic variety. With our extensive knowledge of the terroir and the grape variety, we created a wine with a deep identity, capable of expressing and representing not only the best expression of the variety but also its origin and its people.

Morandé Vigno is a wine of very intense purple-red color, with pronounced aromas of sour cherries, red cherries, and black plums, accompanied by subtle floral notes of violets, as well as touches of coffee and dark chocolate. On the palate, it presents a tremendous character, with juicy red fruit reminiscent of raspberries and cherries, complemented by floral notes and toasted wood. Vigno is a young and tense wine, with great persistence, concentration, and tannins that promise a long life ahead.

For us, it is a true honor to participate in the Vigno association, as it represents one of the most significant innovations in the Chilean wine industry. Built on collaborative work and with a vision aligned with market expectations, this initiative has a significant impact on the participating wineries, the territory, the Maule community, and Chile’s image as a producer of high value-added, differentiated products.
