Restlessness and the explorer spirit are and have been a substantial part of Viña Morandé.

The search for new origins is a hallmark that Pablo Morandé started but that has permeated the entire winery team. We were pioneers in the Casablanca Valley and important milestones were achieved by Pablo’s hand, such as the bottling of the first Carignans from the Maule Valley and Cinsault in Itata.

With this same exploring spirit, we arrived at one of the southernmost areas of Chile, Araucanía, specifically Traiguén in the Malleco valley. In this extreme southern latitude, between the Andes Mountain and the Nahuelbuta Mountain, with volcanic soils and a rather cold and rainy climate, we decided to make wines with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.

This is how Black Series was born, a line that seeks to achieve wines of singular elegance and complexity in one of the most extreme terroirs in the country for wine production, but which, nevertheless, is an ideal terroir to produce high-end Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a different style from other prominent origins such as Limarí or Aconcagua.

Unlike the previous ones, which offer wines of marked minerality and sharp acidity, the Malleco area presents wines of great tension and fruity austerity, as well as complexity, balance and finesse. A very typical style of elegance on the palate and subtlety on the nose and palate, which also with some aging in the bottle, we can see a truly surprising evolution.

The Black Series portfolio consists of a Chardonnay, which shows a tense and fresh acidity and a vertical structure in the mouth. A fine and complex wine, with a long persistence that highlights the austere character of its fruit and a delicate minerality. It has notes of citrus fruits and green apples, as well as notes of nuts, such as hazelnuts and toasted chestnuts.

For its part, our Black Series Pinot Noir is an excellent example of volcanic breccia soils, rich in iron, developing a wine with a fine-grained tannic structure, intensely fruity and discreet at the same time.

This is a wine with sensation that feels deep, fresh and juicy. Its structure is delicate and firm, with fine tannins that suggest a great capacity for evolution over time. It has notes of red fruits, almost bloody mineral character. Its floral notes that are reminiscent of violets also stand out.

Undoubtedly, two wines that challenge us, that force us to be very careful when handling the grapes but that surprise us with their extraordinary quality and such unique potential that we could only find in Malleco.
