Cabernet Sauvignon: The Prime Example of Chilean Wine Potential

There’s no doubt that when we talk about Chilean wine, one of the first grape varieties that comes to mind is Cabernet Sauvignon. This French-origin variety has indeed found the perfect place to thrive and showcase its extraordinary potential and various expressions in Chilean soil.

Originally from Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon is a vigorous vine that flourishes best in gravelly soils with moderate water levels. One of its most acclaimed expressions is found specifically in the Maipo Valley. This region boasts a stable Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and cold, humid winters. It is protected by the Andes Mountains and the Maipo River, and its mineral-rich, sandy-clayey, well-draining soils greatly favor this variety. It yields a unique and distinctive terroir expression, with noticeable tannins and aromatic notes of black and red fruits, spices, and balsamic undertones.

From this valley, our Selección de Viñedos Cabernet Sauvignon stands out with its aromas of red fruit like cassis, plums, raspberries, and hints of tobacco and bitter chocolate. On the palate, it reveals juiciness, enveloping tannins, and excellent persistence. It possesses a robust structure, fine tannins, and a lasting finish.

The Maule Valley is another terroir where Cabernet Sauvignon has achieved its own distinct and characteristic expression. With its subhumid Mediterranean climate and soils of alluvial and volcanic origin, this region contributes juicy red and black fruit flavors with a delicate rusticity to this variety. From this area, our Pionero Cabernet Sauvignon shines—a wine with intense red color, aromas reminiscent of black fruits like maqui and blueberries, and a substantial structure and body, with a long-lasting persistence on the palate.

Two very different yet unique expressions of their place of origin. Two Cabernet Sauvignons with different profiles that seek to showcase Chile’s great potential for crafting extraordinary, expressive, and distinctive wines.
