The Maipo terroir and its influence on Vitis Única

Something that has stood out to us for years as Viña Morandé, has been our drive to create the best possible wines to have a portfolio that fills us with pride. Wines with a clear and distinctive personality, which stand out for their quality, but also for their innovation, which is achieved after years of studies, tests and, above all, a lot of conviction.

A factor that has been very relevant in this mission has been the meticulous study of the denominations of origin or terroirs in which we carry out our different projects. An example of this is undoubtedly Vitis Única, a portfolio of wines from traditional vines that come from the very particular selection of specific sectors within their respective vineyards. This choice, together – of course – with other factors, such as the winemaking techniques applied, among others, result in wines of great complexity, structure and elegance.

And it is that particularly in Vitis Única, the terroir is paramount. What we seek with the meticulous selection of each of these specific sectors, is to enhance the typicity of each of the varieties that make up this incredible portfolio and, at the same time, honor the vines of each of the terroirs where their wines come from.

When we talk about making a Cabernet Sauvignon with a marked profile of red fruit, but at the same time full-bodied and concentrated, the first choice was, without a doubt, the Maipo Valley, one of the most emblematic wine valleys in Chile. Its exceptional conditions for growing Bordeaux varieties have made it a world-renowned terroir. This area, located at the foot of the Andes Mountain and on the north bank of the Maipo River, has mineral-rich, sandy-clayey soils with good permeability. Its climate is stable, Mediterranean with dry and hot summers and cold and humid winters. It is these climate and soil conditions that allow the Maipo terroir to be so appreciated, since it favors the concentration and natural ripeness of the grape clusters, obtaining powerful and complex wines.

Our Vitis Única Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example of the valley, which stands out for its deep cherry red color and its aromas of black and red fruits such as plums, cassis and cherries. It is a full-bodied, round, complex wine with abundant velvety tannins and great aging potential.

Likewise, from this same area is Vitis Única Carmenère, a fruity, fresh, complex wine, with earthy flavors and massive, velvety tannins. Its vinification process is quite special for its type, since its fermentation is mainly in French oak foudres, where it acquires freshness, acidity and fruit intensity. A Carmenere with a much more fruity and deep profile than what we usually find in the industry.

Both wines share the desire to make known the benefits of their origin, a Maipo that has so much to offer and that surprises us with reds of extraordinary character.
