The Red Wines of Morandé Adventure

As you may already know, for over 10 years, I have had the honor of leading the Morandé Adventure line. Along with the winemaking team at Viña Morandé, we have created a portfolio that is the result of extensive experimental work, where each of us has infused our personality and style.

These are bold wines, made without rules—true oenological adventures that aim to impress with their diversity, innovation, and quality. It’s a line of wines where we have attempted to reinterpret the Chilean wine heritage, using less traditional grape varieties and innovative winemaking and aging methods.

The Adventure line consists of 10 wines, but this time I want to focus on the red wines. First and foremost, Aterciopelado pays tribute to the ancient Cauquenino Velvet, reviving the País grape, a rustic variety typical of the Chilean countryside traditionally used for the production of everyday wines. Aterciopelado seeks to elevate the grape to a more elegant, balanced, and full-bodied expression, showcasing its great potential for creating wines of greater complexity. It stands out for its unique character—youthful, with fresh and fruity aromas.

Creole, on the other hand, is a wine produced with the Cinsault and País grapes, two varieties deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of southern Chile, originating from old vines in the Interior Dryland of Itata and Maule. For us, Creole is the reflection and faithful representative of the Chilean countryside. It is intensely fruity, fresh, and has a soft structure.

El Gran Petit, the small giant in our portfolio, represents Viña Morandé’s commitment to two little-explored grapes with great potential: Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, now flourishing in the La Moralina vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley. It is a juicy wine, with abundant and generous structure, featuring velvety, soft, and round tannins.

Similarly, Antiguas Raíces is part of our Adventure portfolio. It is a Garnacha-based wine that also incorporates varieties such as Syrah, Carignan, Marsanne, and Rousanne. Born out of the interest in reinterpreting Mediterranean varieties in the Maule Valley, it involves the co-fermentation of red and white grapes to create an innovative blend with a very clear personality—a distinctly fruity wine with a marked presence of red fruit, high acidity, and freshness.

Tirazis is a wine of great elegance and complexity that aims to showcase the immense potential of the Syrah grape in cold climate zones. It has a medium body and great persistence, with a good balance between acidity and tannins. Colinas de Ránquil, on the other hand, is a País grape wine that contributes to deciphering the extraordinary terroirs present in Chile, rescuing heritage grapes and creating unique wines with a profound sense of origin. It is an elegant wine with a strong structure and well-defined tannins.

El Padre is a wine that honors the Cabernet Franc grape—the parent of none other than the iconic Cabernet Sauvignon. With this wine, we aim to demonstrate its great potential through a complex, highly structured, and elegant wine that showcases the full character of this variety.

Finally, VIGNO represents one of the most significant initiatives in the Chilean wine industry, of which we are founding partners. This Carignan, with a touch of Syrah, reflects a hidden gem in the Maule Valley—a terroir that perfectly combines the tradition of the Chilean countryside and the Carignan grape, a Mediterranean variety reborn in Maule to reveal its unique character. It is a powerful wine with notes of red fruits and flowers, a youthful and tense structure, and great persistence.
