In his latest annual report on Chilean wines, James Suckling notes that our country is producing wines of excellent quality, which still maintain remarkable values. He especially recommends the 2018 and 2019 vintages.

The report, which was published by Suckling on his website, is divided into two parts: the first, entitled “A different Chile: Greatness beckons, but is it a leap too far?” recognizes the contribution of those who, like Viña Morandé, have not been afraid to drift apart from the established rules and have dared to be different, thus giving life to wines that are very pleasant to drink. It’s not for nothing that 86% of the wines tasted by Suckling’s team were rated with more than 90 points, meaning that they are highly recommended.

In the report’s second part, “A different Chile: Embracing a Shifting Winescape”, Suckling highlights both the hard work done by the winemakers that take part in VIGNO as well as the great leap of the country’s Chardonnay wines, with a sustained increase of quality in recent decades.

In his report, Suckling highlights Viña Morandé’s Gran Reserva Pinot Noir 2019 granting it 92 points. This wine, whose grapes have a thin and delicate skin, ferment in small open-top wooden tanks using manual punch-downs to extract only the positive components from the skins, but without over-extracting.

VIGNO 2018, which forms part of our Adventures range, was awarded 93 points by Suckling. Two other wines that also make up this line received 92 points: Despechado 2020, a Pinot Noir from the Casablanca Valley, and Mediterráneo 2018, a blend of red and white Mediterranean varieties. Last, but not least, our Gran Petit 2018, a blend of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot that originates in our Alto Cachapoal vineyards, was granted 91 points.
